Q: Are vitamin B12 supplements derived from an animal, synthetic or plant source?
I am a vegetarian that’s considering going vegan. I realize I will need to take B12 but want to make sure that it’s not from an animal source.

A: B12 is from bacteria, in B12 supplements I think it is a synthetic form, that can be from cyanocobalamin, there are oral supplements available for methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin (known in the supplement industry as dibencozide and coenzyme B12), and to a lesser extent, hydroxocobalamin.

Captain Howdy: If you study the vegan diet and B12 you would see it is the most naturalist diet. You don’t have to take any supplements as a vegan, some choose to for whatever reasons. Most supplements made are geared toward non-vegans (hence the animal products it contains). A lot of people non vegan and some vegan take supplements to be on the safe side. To be honest I have met more people who take supplement vitamins and feed their kids those Flintstone vitamin pills that where omnivores, than I have met a vegan take supplements. And some vegans (very few) believe we are omnivores, but the fact is, if any one would pay attention to evidence and evolution would know we are natural herbivores.

Q: How often should vitamin B12 supplements be taken by a strict vegetarian?
I hear it takes a long time to run out of B12, so taking it every day(unless you’re borderline deficient or trying to build up a large reserve) isn’t necessary. So which is best for maintaining optimal levels of B12? Once a week? Once a month? Is sublingual B12 as effective as injections?

A: I have read and heard that 1ml Vitamin B12 injection once a month is a good dose. Vitamin B12 is a Water Soluble Vitamin. There is almost no risk of overdosing.

Q: Vegans, you will take Vitamin B12 Supplements, but you will not eat honey?
I’m just trying to understand since B12 comes from animal protein correct?
I’m a new lacto-ovo vegetarian

A: No, B12 does not come from animal protein. It comes from micro-organisms, primarily bacteria. Animals get B12 by eating food and soil contaminated with these micro-organisms, and therefore it ends up getting stored in their system. However, the vegan vitamin supplements do not get the B12 from animals, they use it directly from the source, the micro-organisms.

Q: Do Vitamin B12 supplements have side effects?
My face felt very dry and red the same day I started taking these supplements. The bottle said that slight irritation could occur by won’t last.. Then after having problems breathing today I decided to lookin into it more. And this is what I found…..

Dermatologic: Itching, rash, transitory exanthema, and urticaria have been reported. Vitamin B12 (20 micrograms/day) and pyridoxine (80mg/day) has been associated with cases of rosacea fulminans, characterized by intense erythema with nodules, papules, and pustules. Symptoms may persist for up to 4 months after the supplement is stopped, and may require treatment with systemic corticosteroids and topical therapy.

A: Vitamin B supplements in general, especially those that contains Niacin can cause flushing of the skin. I would say that you might try a B complex without Niacin (B3) or a “No Flush” Niacin.

If you have breathing problems, I would quit taking immediately.

Q: where can i get b12 vitamin supplements, or better yet, add it to my diet?
i apparently lack vitamin b12, vitamin d, and iron.

A: B12 is NOT an issue of getting proper amounts it is an absorption issue because alot of peolpe can’t not properly absorb vitamin B12. Case in point, almost all cereals, milks ect are FORTIFIED with B vitamins, why do they all have B12 added to them? Certainly they are not adding B12 for the vegan populations, which accounts for like what 1-5% of the population!! B12 levels are low for all people, ever those who eat meat!! So if meat is such a great source of B12 (yes there is B12 in meat and dairy) why is everything fortified with it!! Well if you do some research you will find out that B12 is actually a bacteria that contains cobalt used for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis so it is VERY important. Well since we live in a sterile society and everything is cleaned and all bacteria is killed alot of people have trouble getting the B12 that we need.

You can supplement, I would suggest either taking a supplement with Methylcobalamin and seeing if that works, if you are really low you can get a B12 injection which bypasses any absorption issues.

Hope that helps.

Q: Where can i get vitamin B12 supplements?
And how much are they?
And how often do i need to take them?
BTW I’m 14 and i live in the US

A: Are you vegan? Because vegetarians get the B-12 they need from eggs, dairy and enriched foods.

Many foods are enriched with B-12 (fake meats, cereals, non-dairy milks, etc.)

Other then that you can take nutritional yeast or go to a health store and ask about b-12 pills.

Q: B12 vitamin supplements; what are they good for?
I started taking them a while back but cannot remember why

A: Vegetarians really need to supplement B12, they have a hard time accessing it in their diet. I highly suggest B50 complex daily for energy. I can really tell a difference taking them. This has all the B vitamins.

Q: what vitamin supplements should someone who doesnt get a good intake of vegetables take?
im a medical student and I dont have time to learn to cook for myself so the best i can do is occasionally much on carrot sticks or grab a salad at the cafeteria. im already on vitamin B12 supplements. anything else i should look for?

A: V-8 juices for those extra fruits and veggies you are not eating. Try to make your food and drink choices all natural foods. Most of the little bottles are 2 servings, so make the most of them.

I hate doctors or nurses who take supplements instead of learning the proper nutrition for keeping themselves healthy. They cannot ever advise patients on proper nutrition.

Q: How do you get Vitamin-B12 in a vegetarian diet without any supplements/vitamins?
How to get Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B9 would also be nice to know.
I’m not trying to lose weight and eating fish is not vegetarian. If you eat fish you are eating meat; therefore, you are not a vegetarian.

A: Legumes (beans) for B12

Q: Vitamin B12……….?
I took Vitamin B12 supplement one tablet before 6 hours but still it can not digest by me, i am feeling my tongue has rust taste and vomiting sensation.Feeling bad bad bad. What should i do? Please tell me
as soon as possible…

A: don’t take any more

Q: What is a safe amount of iron and vitamin b12 to take when pregnant?
I’m 17 weeks pregnant and want to see if taking an iron and vitamin b12 supplement will make me feel a little better. I’ve tried taking things like pregnacare, but they make me sick so I figure I may be better off taking supplements.

What is a safe amount of each of these for me to take?

Thanks in advance!
=]

A: Your doctor is the best person to advise you, but I know that B6 is much more important than B12 during pregnancy. My doctor told me to take 100mg of B6 twice daily.

Q: I just became a vegan. Do I need to take a vitamin B12 supplement? Do I need to take any other supplements?
as a vegan? What health risks do I have as a vegan and how can I try to prevent these? thanks

A: Be careful what b-12 supplement you take. If the b-12 is derived from sperilina algae it will be a left handed molecule that the body can’t process, and can lead to a b-12 deficiency. A good substitute could be Klamath Lake blue green algae.

Q: Vitamin B12 and supplements?
Hey, all, thanks for your previous help with my other questions.

I take a Centrum multivitamin religiously, I love them and they give me extra energy. On the vitamin fact on the side of the bottle, it says “Vitamin B12 6 mcg 100% Daily Value”

Is this all the B12 I need, or is this daily value assuming that I eat meat? Basing your judgment on an entirely vegan diet, of course.
Oops, I had no idea Centrum wasn’t vegan. I haven’t actually taken the plunge yet, I have not bought any new animal products yet, I’m concentrating on learning as much as I can while the rest of the animal products in my house are used. I don’t feel great about eating it, but I would rather that than let it go to waste while I am still learning.

A: first off, that vaitamin brand is not vegan… I buy mine from a health food store that states it is vegan
you can also try eating seaweed, as in sushi (vegan of cource) =), it has lots of vaitamins in it, including b12!!!

Q: If I get anemia for vitamin b12 deficiency, will Iron supplements help me to cure that anemia?
I am asking this because most of the doctors just prescribe iron supplements without examining the reason of anemia.

A: You need intramuscular injections of Vitamin B12 for Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Q: My MCV size is below the normal range (microcytic) but the doc has put me on Vitamin B12 supplement .It it ok?
My MCV size is below the normal range (microcytic) but the doc has put me on Vitamin B12 supplement .It it ok?

A: Errrrrrrr………..good question.

If i have not mistaken, microcytic anemia are caused by iron def…
Vit B12 and folate def are commonly for macrocytic anemia.

Ahah.. If you ask your doc again, i wonder whether he would change your medication prescriptions…

If prescription of B6, its still ok because hypochromic anemia may be caused by vitamin B6 deficiency from a low iron intake, diminished iron absorption, or excessive iron loss.
