Q: natures made b12 vitamins, 250 mcg..? is it good for 12 year olds?
A: First, B12 is best absorbed under the tongue in the methylcobalamin form.
Second, Natures made is a horrible brand.
Third, you really don’t need that supplement unless: you’re a vegetarian, you’re anemic, or you have brain/memory problems.
Q: How much mcg of b12 should I take?
I’m becoming a Vegan or in the process so How much mcg of the b12 Vitamin should I take 1,000 or 250 mcg?
A: My doctor suggested that I take at least 500 mcg sublingual B12 once a week. Your doctor may suggest different for you. I would ask them what it is that they would have you to take. Or if you don’t have a personal doctor or funds to pay for such – check out sites that give the suggested amounts needed for a healthy diet.
While you can eat fortified foods with B12, many if they really looked at what they were eating are not eating enough of the fortified to guarantee that they are getting what they need within their diet (be it because of variety changes in food choices, etc.).
Just as meat eaters don’t always eat meat every day, same thing for a vegetarian/vegan. Vegetarians/vegans are not always going to be eating fortified things every day in a varied diet or when busy and eating on the run.
Q: Can you feed rats vitamin, calcium, manganese etc where yo get from healths store/chemist/supermarket?
I have just been looking at a homemade rat diet by Debbie Ducommum and a few of the ingredients are like supplements like calcium and that, can rats actually eat them?
This is the website for the homemade rat diet:
Recipe for Molasses Mix
(will last two rats about a week depending on size–for more than two rats, you can multiply the recipe)
1500 mg calcium from chewable tablets or liquid calcium with vitamin D
2000 mcg chromium picolinate
250 mcg vitamin B12
40 mg manganese (from capsules)
3/4 C Total cereal
1 lb packaged (not bulk) soft tofu
4 t shelled raw sunflower seeds
1 T flax seeds
3 T raw oatmeal
4 t pearled barley
4 t millet
3 T cooked brown rice
4 T toasted wheat germ
2 1/4 T nutritional yeast flakes (5.6 g)
2 T blackstrap (dark or full flavor) molasses
Soak the chromium picolinate, calcium, and B12 tablets in a tiny bit of water and when soft, crush. Coarsely crush the Total in a plastic bag. Mash the tofu in a bowl. Add all ingredients together with warm molasses and mix thoroughly. Store covered in the refrigerator or freezer.
A: Yeah, you just follow her directions. She’s a well respected member of the rat community, and has been working with rats for years. Rats need vitamins and minerals just like humans do (although not really vitamin C, as humans and guinea pigs are the only furries that can’t synthesize their own)
Q: How much is too much vitamin D, B12?
(I originally posted this in Health > Diet & Fitness, but only received relentless spam and answers without scientific evidence or medical basis. After deleting the post, I have decided to post in this category hoping for a more specific and reliable answer. I appologize for any inconvenience.)
Being anemic, I am currently taking three supplements recommended by my doctor, iron, vitamin D and B12. I recently purchased SlimQuick, a weight-loss supplement I have used before, which contains both vitamins, D and B12. I am unsure if the amount of these vitamins I am consuming is beyond a healthy dosage. According to my doctor, any excess of needed vitamins will be urinated out, yet my worries remain.
Floradix Floravital (ferrous gluconate):
Vitamin B12 – 7.5 mcg (125% DV)
Vitamin D3 Supplement:
Vitamin D3 – 1000 IU (250% DV)
B-Complex Sublingual Liquid:
Vitamin B12 – 1,200 mcg (20,000% DV)
SlimQuick*:
Vitamin D – 200 IU (50% DV)
Vitamin B12 – 12 mcg (200% DV)
(Also includes 200 mcg of Folic Acid)
Total:
Vitamin D – 1,200 IU (300% DV)
Vitamin B12 – 1,219.5 mcg (20,325% DV)
The percentages are what worry me.
Note: In a blood test, both my vitamin D and B12 levels were between 5 and 8 units below the standard levels.
*SlimQuick contains, from what I can gather, natural ingredients that do not strike me as harmful.

A: Whether a vitamin can get to toxic levels in the body depends on whether they are lipid woluble or water soluble. Lipid soluble vitamins will accumulate in fat when taken in high doses and can then have toxic effectc. Water soluble vitamins will be excreted in the urine when taken in excess. Vitamins A,D, E and K are lipid soluble all the others are water soluble. I would therefore be wary of taken this supplement along with those recommended by your doctor. I would stick with what the doctor has given you and ask him/her for another blood test to check your levels after a few weeks.
Q: How many b12 vitamins can I take?
I started taking B12 vitamins for energy. The bottle says one serving is one gummy. In one gummy there is 250 mcg. Iwas wondering If I could increase the serving to get more energy. Can you even overdose on a vitamin?
A: You should take the Vitamin B complex and not just B12. This group of vitamins works together to produce energy.The vitamin B group is a complex of several vitamins grouped together because they have similar function in the body with great benefits. All B vitamins help the body to convert food (carbohydrates) into fuel (glucose), which is “burned” to produce energy, also help the body metabolize fats and protein. B complex vitamins are necessary for healthy skin, hair, eyes, and liver. They also help the nervous system function properly.
Al Nothing works instantly, you need to take it at least a week to see results. You can not over dose on B12 as it is water soluble and the body only uses what it needs.
Q: Can I take two of my one-a-day prenatal vitamin and not hurt me or the baby?
I know you can over-dose on some vitamins, such as vitamin A. But my friend who is a midwife tells me that the prenatals I’m taking really aren’t that good. She says the amount of each item is very low. It’s enough for the baby, but not enough for me and I am soooo tired. But I am also stingy and I don’t want to buy new prenatal vitamins when I have two full bottles of this one. But if I have to, I will.
Here is a complete listing of everything in it:
Vitamin A – 4,000 I.U. 50%
Vit C – 100 mg 167%
Vit D – 400 I.U. 100%
Vit E – 11 I.U. 37%
Thiamin 1.5 mg 88%
Riboflavin 1.7 mg 85%
Vitamin B6 2.5 mg 104%
Folic Acid 800 mcg 100%
Vitamin B12 4 mcg 50%
Calcium 250 mg 19%
Iron 27mg 150%
Zinc 25 mg 167%
I compared these to a simple b-complex stress vitamin and found many of the amounts in that were twice as high. What do you think?
Oh I’m like 8 weeks along, if that makes any difference.
Karri – I realize you just want me to think about what’s best for my baby, but I DID buy the cheap stuff, and that is why I’m not happy with it. Plus, my baby is going to move into an economic world. I can’t stop living in the world that I live in just because I’m going to have a baby. Heck. I don’t even have health insurance. So why would I splurge on vitamins when I can double-up on the ones I’ve got?
A: Hi Joy!
First of all- CONGRATULATIONS!!! What wonderful news; I’m so happy for you!!!
When it comes to doubling up on vitamins I would be a bit cautious as too many of certain vitamins can actually be harmful to the baby. Dr. Sears has some good info:
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/1/T011400.asp#T011406
You can easily find more info doing web searches about which vitamins in excess are not good.
Sometimes with prenatal vitamins you get a lot of iron- too much and you will get constipated (which seems to go right along with pregnancy anyway LOL).
Initially I was taking a prenatal that had the following composition:
Essential Fatty Acids:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids………………..330 mg
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) …………260 mg
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) …………..40 mg
a-Linolenic Acid (ALA)……………….30 mg
Linoleic Acid………………………30 mg
Vitamins:
Vitamin C (as Ester-C®*) ………………25 mg
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)…………….170IU
Vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate)………30IU
Folic Acid, USP……………………..1 mg
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride)………25 mg
Minerals:
Calcium………………………..150 mg
Iron
Carbonyl iron (elemental iron) ………….20 mg
Sumalate™† (elemental iron) ……………7 mg
~~~
A few weeks toward then end of my pregnancy and now while I’m breastfeeding I take prenatals that have this composition:
http://www.citranatal.com/Product/Comparison.aspx
(the CitraNatal Assure). I was going to take Omega 3 Supplements but get enough through my regular diet. The only extra thing I have to take is a daily calcium supplement (can’t have dairy- little one is sensitive to milk proteins and I’m lactose intolerant anyway!)
Maybe all you really need to do is get some supplements (which are are actually not badly priced as the market for them is competitive).
You should check with your doctor or midwife (and/or your friend who is a midwife) about doubling up on the vitamins. I personally don’t know if it’s a good idea (more than likely you’ll pee all that excess out but since I have no medical training I just don’t know and it makes me nervous). Ultimately you could save these prenatals for after the baby is born (are you going to breastfeed?) and get different ones for during your pregnancy.
Would your friend consider going with you to find some? Places like health food stores and Sprouts/Central Market/Whole Foods, etc. have really great prenatals that are not very expensive. Maybe pair them up with some other supplements (omegas) and that should be just fine.
I wish you peace.
Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide.
That’s with 3 tablets, and I’m only taking two a day, one in the morning and one at night.
Ever since I started taking them, I’ve been extremely hungry. I can’t stop eating. This morning I ate 3 bowls of cereal and then was still hungry, even after waiting a half an hour between them. I would think the vitamins would help with hunger. I’m not overweight (5′3″ and 119 lbs), and I haven’t changed my diet or exercise at all.
A: No, but why on earth are you taking them?
Eat a good mixed diet and you don’t need them.
You only need to take supplements if your doctor recommends them because of some deficiency.
Q: Are any of these amounts of nutrients damaging to a teen? These are found in a Multi Sport Vitamin.?
40 year old woman, high bad cholesterol, low good cholesteral, about 50 lbs overweight. Partial hysterectomy, peri-menopausal. Slightly elevated sugar levels. Don’t eat out much, try to eat somewhat healthy. Plus take Fish Oil. <------- Don't know if any of this matters but wanted to include it.
A: You need to look this brand up on the web to be sure it is one that is well absorbed by the body. If it isn’t well absorbed it won’t do you much good.
Q: I’m thinking of taking prenatals for hair/etc (not pregnant). Is this vitamin safe?
I know it’s important not to go crazy with the iron and some other nutrients if you aren’t pregnant. This one seems reasonable to me, is there anything I should be concerned about?
A: B12 might be a problem.
From wiki: The Dietary Reference Intake for an adult ranges from 2 to 3 µg (micrograms) per day. Vitamin B-12 is believed to be safe when used orally in amounts that do not exceed the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). The RDA for vitamin B-12 in pregnant women is 2.6 µg per day and 2.8 µg during lactation periods. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of consuming greater amounts of Vitamin B-12 during pregnancy.
Your prenatal vitamin has 100 micrograms of B12. You may want to do some research of your own into this, to see if this is something you want to try.
Q: Taking too much iron? Vegetarian question.?
I became a vegetarian last november (for those of you who know, I’m a pesca-ovo-lacto-vegetarian, I eat fish, eggs and milk) but lately I’ve been very tired. I eat tons of protein – cheese beans, tofu, and TVP (if you don’t know what it is, don’t worry about it, it’s a BETTER source of protein that meat!) but I totally neglected to supplement my iron intake. (duh)
So, I went out to buy iron supplements and I found IRON AID!
Which contains:
150mg vitamin C (250% daily value)
Folic Acid 400 mcg (100% daily value)
Vitamin B12 100 mcg (1,667% daily value) !!!
Iron 25 mg (139% daily value)
Well I’m not on a 2000 calorie diet. My intake is more like 1,200 calories per day. I’m a smaller person (we’ve been over this with my doctor, I just can’t eat that much! And I’m a healthy weight!)
What’s this all gonna DO to me? Is ODing on these vitamins going to have annoying side effects?
Go ahead. be graphic. I can take it.
Just don’t be rude about my choice to be vegetarian.
will consult a nutritionist…when I’m richer. Right now, I’m on an HMO and my group would NEVER approve a nutritionist in a million years. I doubt they’d test my blood, but I can ask my jerk doctor
)
there is such a thing as a pesca-vegetarian. We’re not all vegans. Some us boycott the poultry and beef industry and don’t have a problem eating fish.
Expand your thinking.
A: You don’t need that much iron. A fortified cereal in addition to what you are already eating should be sufficient. You might want to check the nutrition label on your milk too, some have a little added iron. Too much iron can cause bowel problems and stomach ulcers. Some studies even suggest that being slightly anemic may reduce your risk of heart disease (slightly being the operative word; if you’re feeling sick it’s not good).
That’s also quite a bit of B12…I don’t think it’s toxic but you don’t need that much. You will be getting enough from the eggs, milk and fish. If you’re eating all of those things in addition to lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains you really don’t need a supplement of any kind.
Q: All the supplements I take can I add anymore??? 10 pts and 5 stars!!!!?
Any other supplement I should be taking?
A: magnesium & calcium
Q: Is it okay to take more than one dietary supplement at once?
Would it be okay if I took 250 mcg of B12, 600 mg of calcium, and 500 mg of vitamin C this morning? If not, is there a combination I can take? If no combination would be healthy, which supplement is the most important?
I’m not eating anything with it, if it affects the answer.
Thanks in advance!
A: It’s usually best to get these from foods, if at all possible.
Too high doses of any vitamin or mineral can be toxic.
More information would help-
Is there a reason you aren’t eating?
I can’t see your profile at the moment either- are you male or female?
Age and lifestyle can also be factors in determining which are important.
